House plant help

Hi all! I'm hoping someone would be able to help me figure out what I'm doing wrong with my houseplants or if this is normal life cycle. All my houseplants have been around for 2 or more years, but in the last 7 months several have died. I pay close attention to them, but they're just thinning out and dying. Here are some pics of the plants I have left that seem to be following the same pattern. They get plenty of sunlight and I think I'm watering them properly. However, this past summer I was out of town quite a bit and they did miss a watering here and there.
