Damson gin-smells of almonds
I have made Damson gin for the first time. I had some frozen damsons which I steeped in gin for about 3 months (as per instructions). I have just strained and bottled it, but there is a very strong smell of almonds. I am aware that the stones contain a cyanide based substance, so I am worried that this may have seeped into the gin. Is it safe to drink? Or should I get rid of it?
thanks in advance

The alcohol from the gin will do you more damage than the cyanide from the damson stones. Sounds like you are genetically disposed to detect cyanide at very low doses. Some people are very sensitive to the smell but others can't detect it at all. I would happily enjoy the gin and not worry too much about the cyanide, it is present at a very low level and won't do any harm unless you drink the entire bottle in one sitting.
Thank you, I’ll give it a go then
