planting laurel near mature trees

i want to plant a laurel hedge near some big dicidious trees. The roots of the trees are running along the line I want my hedge. Will the hedge grow if planted in the middle of roots?

they will, but not as robustly as they would in their own space.

I have laurels under weeping willows, they took a while to get going but doing OK now
