constructing a leaf storage

I would be grateful if someone might be able to answer the following-

I intend to construct a leaf storage in a corner of my garden. One side would be brick, the other wood and the third is an ivy hedge.

I wondered if the leaves need more ventilation than the above would provide, in order to produce mulch.

Also, how long before usable mulch is created please.

Many thanks,

Des.

Hi, I do mine with chicken wire. See pic-the one on the left is the new batch.

Leave it there for 18 months and it'll look like one on the right, Monty Don says it takes 12 months but he probably turns it to make it quicker

Monty chops his with his mower. I agree, wire is best. Mine has a wooden frame with a hinged "door" at the bottom and another at easy access height. This means I can remove composted material when I want it and just chuck more leaves on the top each year, so I don't need more than one. I also have a wire cover because we live in a windy area and the top leaves would blow away.

  • Protecting the leaf with a covering such as an old bed sheet or a purchased leaf protector will ensure the wood doesn't get scratched and is able to breathe while stored. Plastic protectors can stick to the wood and also don't allow the wood to breathe so can affect the finish on the wood.

Whoops! Think the above refers to the leaf of an extendable dining table 😂
