Compost or Manure?

I have removed some large shrubs from a border in my front garden. I want to add some nutrients back into the soil and wondered if I should add several bags of manure or bags of good quality compost? I'm not sure of the pros and cons, or should I mix both?

I plan to plant grasses, a phormium and maybe a palm type tree in the border.

    I agree, manure every time if the alternative is commercial multi-purpose compost as that contains added nutrients which only last a few weeks and will wash out with the winter rain.  Once the added nutrients are gone, it's pretty sterile stuff.

    I agree, Manure will improve the soil structure around the plants. Also throw in some fish , blood, and bonemeal in to the mix prior to planting your new shrubs as this will encourage good root growth
