Why?????????
in Fruit & veg
I dug up first lot of my main crop (King Edward) potatoes today and I had so many small ones (approx. 1/2inch) probably had about 18 normal size. Fertilized the compost and watered them regularly too. Anyone know why they would be so small. Grew them from seed potatoes but let from than one chit on them should I only be leaving one chit on them when planting them? Opinions seem to differ so much.
Any advice would be helpful for next year. I grow mine in tyres built up to four high every time I see the shoots showing put the next tyre on and lots of compost.
Many thanks

Not enough water. Potatoes need a huge amount of liquid to grow the tubers. Usual reason for small tubers is lack of water especially in enclosed spaces like tyres.
I was told to water them with what I thought was a good amount. Then put the same again on. I think they are very thirsty things.
Thank you for your feed back I thought I had watered them enough but obviously not. Will try better next year then
Thanks again - I can always get the right answer on here
Is it possible for me to use the small potatoes as seeds for my crop next year. Will they produce my main crop of potatoes.
