You can grow some varieties. I got Douce Provence which says on the packet that it can be sown In October-November for overwintering. Not sure how tall they grow, but plenty of time to find out, they won't reach full height this year
I planted mine last week, though I still think it may be optimistic given where I live!

Also overwinter Douce Provence, you will need to cover/cloche later on, they arent very tall ,dont require staking. I dont grow peas direct, at any time, you cannot tell if they have been eaten or whatever, there is a old saying, when you sow peas "One for the rook,one for the crow,, one to rot ,one to grow." I sow them in little modules, standard seed tray, covered at night by a plastic lid, learnt my lesson when we caught the mouse pinching them, then plant them out when they are about 3 inches tall.

I know what you mean about the saying Mice ate 90% of mine so I barely had enough for saved seed, no crop to eat..
