Can't really tell ... But lots of things eat fungi, from slugs and snails to rodents and other mammals large and small.

  • Difficult to identify but as a general rule of thumb, white mushrooms with white gills are best left alone as many are poisonous.  As for what has been eating them, it is probably slugs which love most mushrooms and eat them with impunity as they are not affected by the toxins.  Personally, I'm always delighted when I see fungi of any type (except Honey fungus!) growing in my garden. image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Yes Bob I love Fungi too, think they are fascinating and so many different colours and shapes, have seen loads this year. These were under friends shrub and we couldn't find them in her book!

I THINK I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF THESE MUSHROOMS LATELY AS I HAVE BEEN WALKING NEAR DECIDUOUS WOODLAND.

I THINK THEY MIGHT BE ONE OF THE GROUP OF MUSHROOMS CALLED ENTOLOMA, NONE OF WHICH IS EDIBLE. THEY LOOK QUITE TEMPTING AND FROM A DISTANCE I AT FIRST THOUGHT THAT I HAD FOUND SOME TASTY WOOD BLEWITS.

BUT THE WHITE GILLS ARE A DEFINITE NO-NO.

Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
