Tree seed ID please!
Hi there,
I found those seeds on my lawn under my Caucasian fir tree (Abies nordmanniana) but they are not its seeds. I cannot identify a tree or shrub nearby which would produce such seeds.
You are invited to a virtual visit of my garden (in English or in French).

Further to my previous post I've gone back to the garden corner where I had collected those "seeds" and I found one with its black "envelope". Right under my Prunus lusitanica - Portuguese Laurel. Would those seeds come from that shrub then? What do you think?
Interesting. Think you need to look further afield.
It appears to be a nut rather than a berry.
I wonder if an animal is collecting them.
Might it be Juglans nigra...black walnut?
With the green husk outer coating removed.

Do you have one of those nearby?

Thanks for your help, Silver surfer. However I do not think those seeds belong to that Juglans nigra plant (which does not grow anywhere nearby anyway).
you'd better sow some PJ,

Looks like a nutmeg/mace before it’s dried out
Yup, it looks like Portuguese laurel
Portugal laurel has black berries and rather smaller than the illustration

It isn't anything like our black walnut s or any of our other walnut s.
Finally solved the mystery! Those are seeds of the Laurus nobilis, Laurel tree. See this seeds site at http://www.weberseeds.de/laurus-nobilis.html
There is indeed a large Laurel tree in my neighbour's garden and I quite often find seedlings of that tree in my borders, which I duly remove.
Laurus nobilis, usually called Bay or Bay Laurel. I have never seen those seeds though mine flowers every year.
