Hi

I was hoping someone could help me with my bamboo. the leaves are turning brown, the canes are dying and there seems to be a white powder all over it. Just effecting one bed. All other bamboo are ok -  Is it a lost cause.  Also what is the best feed for bamboo

  • Is there a chance that that clump has flowered?

Bamboo flowers are like grass flowers, so fairly easy to miss!

It's just that bamboos generally die after flowering, so that is one possible cause.

It looks like an outbreak of mealybug. Is the fluff waxy, and can you find horrible little aphid-like critters hiding within it?

If it is mealybug, one option would be to cut out all the affected growth and burn it, then give the bamboo a bit of TLC with a manure mulch worked into the soil around it. Suspect it might be easier to take the whole lot down to ground level. As anyone who has tried to get rid of bamboo will confirm, it should come back, and although the mealybug may also come back, you might find it easier to catch any re-infestation early.
