What's wrong with my potatoes
hello, yesterday I posted a question about my potatoes ( identified as hollow heart disease) but forgot to ask 1) are they still edible and 2) do I need to do anything to the allotment soil to prevent a recurrence?
thanks

You can cut the affected area away and eat the remainder. I've done it several times and am still here to tell the tale.
As for preventing a recurrence ... improving the water retention of the soil by the addition of organic material might help with erratic growth in dry spells, which may be one of the causes ... it's caused by cultural conditions and is not really a disease (despite its name).
Also, as some potato varieties are said to be more prone to the condition, it may be worth doing a bit of research before choosing your seed potatoes next year.
