From what I've heard this spine-free species is preferred to the spiny common Mahonia species. However, it's not as vigorous.
I bought one two years ago, planted it outside and it's still the same size and showing no inclination to flower.
I think you're right Philippa. Don't think they do so well in colder, more exposed areas.
