Hello. Just prepped a bed for bulb planting. I like to newspaper and mulch round my perennials. Will bulbs cope with this?
Also i just dug out a load of couchgrass. Is it possible to get rid of this nuisance by digging or have i just created a million cuttings?

Not sure about mulching bulbs.
Re couch grass see https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=283
Do you mean shredded newspaper, or sheets of it, as a mulch, oooft?
Shredded would be ok as the bulbs would grow through, us it would with bark etc, but sheets would be too solid for most bulbs to get through.

Hello. I meant laying down sheets of paper over the soil and under the mulch. I read the rhs advice on couch grass given above and dont think I'll be mulching for a while. Gonna plant the bulbs, wait for the evil weed to appear then skoosh it with glycophospate. May mulch after that.
@ oooft,
Please re-consider your decision to use the dangerous Glyphosate product. I am proud to be a French citizen, and that my government has decided to vote against extending EU licence for that chemical suspected of causing cancer.
I'm not sure how you could plant bulbs if you want to use that method of mulching, oooft. If you want to get rid of your couch grass that way, you'd need to leave the bed till next year for planting up.
If you have the bulbs now, you'd be best to plant them in pots for this year, and then you could put them in the bed next year when it's clean - or as clean as you can get it!

Hi Fairy. I'm just gonna skoosh the couch grass with weedkiller and when safe to do so I will overplant the bed with winter pansies instead of mulch
