spring bulbs
Hi all. I have just built a house but will not be levelling or sowing out the lawns until the spring of next year. I keep seeing offers for spring bulbs now but my question is this.. if I buy bags of spring bulbs now will they keep until im ready to plant them next March/April or will they dry out?
thanks Barbara

Hello Barbara
I'm afraid they'll either dry out or go rotten. Bulbs that flower next spring need to be planted now and won't wait ... they're not like seeds and won't keep from year to year.
However, if you're going to be desperate for some flowers in the garden by next spring (and I would be) why not buy some cheap containers and plant bulbs in them ... they'll smile at you in the spring and then next autumn, when the garden is ready for them you can plant them in the garden.

Hi Dove,
Thanks for your reply and advice, I thought that they wouldn't keep, yes I think I will get a few tubs and plant them out, like you said it would be good to have some colour come springtime.
Thanks again

To be honest I always grow my bulbs in pots, it is easier for me as I had a back problem a while ago. And they can be protected with wire from the squirrels trying to dig them up.
