Pruning a lilac tree

this is a lovely double headed white lilac which I love

However this year the growth has been amazing and I want to reduce it back to the height of the wall where it should be.

I have absolutely no experience with trees, what should I do?

Wait until after it has flowered late next Spring and take off as much as you wish, I usually do a 1/3. It's tough as old boots but flowers on last years growth. image
