cutting back arum lily

Hi I planted a couple of small arum lillies in my garden some 4 years ago and they have thrived very well and bloomed richly. However they are about 4 ft tall and keep falling over and I don't really know how to manage them. They obviously love the position they're in but are getting larger by the minute.  I don't know what I'm supposed to do at the end of the season. Is it possible to cut them back to ground level this winter or not?  I've tried digging around bases to lift and possibly separate the rhysomes but they seem completely impenetrable. They are taking over the small border now.  They are really beautiful and I don't wish to lose them but feel I need to do something but not quite sure what.
