Flamboyant losing leaves in spring

Flamboyant tree, about 4 m high, Losing leaves.

We moved to Gaborone, Botswana 6 months ago.

In our small courtyard garden there is one Flamboyant tree.  It was in flower when we moved in in March.  I believe a Flamboyant is deciduous but this tree didn't lose its leaves during the winter.  There was a light frost once and some of the top branches were affected, died and dropped off.

Now that spring is here, although the temperatures are already in the mid 30's so it feels like mid summer, all the leaves are turning yellow and dropping off.  Is the tree confused? Is it too hot?

It must have been here several years so us surely adapted to the climate and conditions.

Hi Becky. There is a lot of good advice here:

  • Thank you.  Lots of info there.  But I'm still not sure about why the tree has gone into autumn mode in the spring.  Possibly what I thought was a light frost has actually killed the tree.  Maybe it's dying slowly.

Could it just be thirsty? You say it is in a courtyard so has it any great depth of soil there?
