Conifer trees

Hi can someone tell me why my conifer trees have all gone brown? They look dead but they are still growing and they are still rooted to the ground. Thank you

  • Hi i have taken 3 photos but i don't know how to upload them to this site, help!

  • Click on the camera icon above right of the box where you type your post, and follow the instructions.  If nothing appears try reducing the size of the photo usually works.

If you still can't get a photo to appear don't give up, let us know and we'll try to help image

  • Ok, now we can see what we've got image  Now for some questions ...

    When were they planted?

Is there a membrane under that gravel, with the trees planted in holes in the membrane?

What's the soil like that they're planted in?

How much water have they been having, and how often?

  • Hi this is their 2nd summer, yes there is membrane under the chippings i have read on the internet that they have not had enough water thats why the are brown so i have stated to soak them at least 3 times a week but i live in Scotland so they have plenty of rain ?

  • I think the soil is clay but there is sand on the top before we layed the membrane.

  • Sadly I don't think the brown areas will recover... conifer type trees grow from the tips and don't usually regrow from further back.

I know that it seems that you've had a lot of rain, but my guess is that under the membrane the soil is dry and hard.

Did you improve the clay soil in the planting area by digging in organic matter like manure or garden compost?

  • No i didn't add anything like that although i did add plant food in every hole before planting, should i give them until next summer and soak them every night or do you recommend that i cut my losses and rip them up, if the later what would you recommend i plant there instead i was going for the hedge look thank you for your help
