Can you identify? Possibly perennials

There are two plants in my garden that I don't know what they are.  Both are clump forming and as of today, 2 September, still have not grown any flowers.  I'm not even sure if they're weeds.

  • Hi SandT

I'm not too sure about the first picture, but I'd hazard a guess that the second one is a geum. Although it should have flowered by now.  I'm sure someone with more experience will be along shortly to help out more than I can image

    See original post

Thank you! Yes, the geum rings a bell. I'm sure I shiver that in as a plug.

Thr other one is a mystery. It looks a bit like a nettle, but it smooth and fast growing

  • The first photo may be asters.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Glad to be of some help, a good mulch and feed next year should provide you with plenty of flowers. Keep deadheading and your geum will keep giving more glorious flowers.  Depending on the variety they can get a bit floppy, I have a Lady Stratheden, Blazing Sunset and Mrs Bradshaw which flop, but I also have a Mai Tai and Koi which are smaller but stay upright.  I'll be honest I do quite like them flopping about, however I've noticed some people support them to keep the flowers more upright.

  • Probably Callistephus chinensis

That would make a lot of sense, yes. I bought so many plug plants in April and forgot what I put in! If I remember correctl, this did include Geum blazing sunset and asters.  I just thought they would have flowered by early September.

  • Asters are very late flowerers and yours look like they are about to bloom.  They will continue until the first frost though.
