Direction question

Ok this may seem simple but I always struggle to wrap my head around this question. Which way does my wall face. In the photos I have pointed the compass directly at the wall and it shows nearly north, so does my wall face north or south??  

I want to grow strawberries and cherry tomatoes in pots in this are next year and am wondering if this is a good spot for these or should I look for a different are or does it really not matter as long as it gets good sun? This area gets shade in morning and sun in afternoon. As I write this I am keeping track of the sun to shade ratio of this spot on an hourly basis.

    This used to have me confused too jay  imageimage.  I think your wall is SW facing.  

    If you stand with your back to the wall looking out into the garden, your compass should point to the 210 mark on your app....the opposite of where it is in the image above.

    Watching how the sun/shade moves around your garden through the seasons is very useful, and taking photos at am/midday/pm is a good way to keep track.

    Thanks pansy face. That means my wall is south facing. Like I said it may be simple to figure out but for some reason I always struggled to figure this out. ?

    With regards to growing cherry tomatoes and strawberries in pots in this area, will this be ok??

    If you're keeping track of sun movement, choose the place that gets the most hours of sun, that will be your closest to South facing.

    If you have a tree or even a fence in the garden, if you have green algae growing on one side of it, but none on the other, then the side with green algae on faces North and the side with no algae faces South.  You could also use the roof of a house.  The South facing roof slope will be clear of moss, but if the North facing roof slope will be mossy.  Who needs  fancy compass! image

    Jay,

    Yes your Toms & strawberries will love he sun for ripening but you will need to keep the pots well watered. Use big pots for the toms rather than growbags they work better- more soil = greater reserves of food & water to keep them going. Troughs on a low stand or legs would be ideal for the strawberries.

    Thanks everyone. After watching the sun movement today I think I have it all sussed with the area in my garden that gets the most sun. 

    When I do my strawberries and tomatoes next year I am going to be putting some netting up around the plants to keep the birds away, but what about the slugs and snails. Will it be safe to use slug pellets around the plants and still be able to eat the fruits or is there a better solution??

    If you're growing in pots you could try using copper to keep the slugs and snails away. I use the copper rings that are designed for going around vulnerable plants but I use them under my pots to raise them off the ground so the slugs/snails would have to climb over them to get onto the pots. There's also copper tape that you can stick around the rims of pots but I haven't tried that.
