they are in an inherited garden when we recently moved. Also we appear to have a large Rhododendron that has buds ??? Is this possible. We live in Surrey
Top and bottom picture are Mahonia - there are many varieties available. The middle is I think a Pieris, it looks very healthy, they prefer an acid soil so quite possible you have a healthy Rhododendron. Are they flower buds or new leaf buds, they can often look similar until the buds mature.

Why can't I inherit a garden like that ?
yeah. All I inherited was blackthorn and stinging nettles
In the sticks near Peterborough
At least you could make sloe-gin
2. Shrub with red leaves is Pieris sp.
The black bits are the seed pods.

Need to see pics to know if you have Rhodo's as well.
Thankyou all so much. It's a big help. Paul B3, everything is really overgrown and leggy. Lots of work needed I think ? Could be worse.
Just a though. Should the Pieris be this big ? It's prob about 12/15 ft !!!

If it's any help , those large Mahonia shrubs can be drastically cut back ; they WILL recover fairly quickly
Thanks again everyone your help is much appreciated
