    Whereabouts are you Barbara?

Not sure of the difference between a Canadian maple and any other kind, but up here in Scotland, it isn't unusual for trees to be shedding at this time of year, especially further north. I'm inclined to think it's a climate influenced issue - cold, or excessive heat can both cause it.

If you can offer more info, that will help with advice. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

My first few beech leaves have started to fall here in the South East as a result of budding much earlier this year (mid/end of April). Everything is further ahead this year for us.

I have noticed our alemanchier has been shedding leaves earlier than usual, in fact l can't  recall seeing it happen this early in over 25 years. I assume it is down to the cool summer we have been having up until now.

Some of the willow by the lake have shed lots of leaves and the Euonymus Alatus are showing Autumn colour.

I think it's the erratic weather. In many places we had a warm dry spring which made everything very early. Then after another hot dry spell we had a short period of cool wet weather. I think a lot of plants think it's Autumn already! I volunteer at Capel Manor and one of the senior lecturers there said at the beginning of August the season seemed to be 4-6 weeks ahead of normal. Lots of Acers are turning colour or with dry leaves already.  Look at the tips of the branches if there are good buds there its ok- just confused like the rest of us!

Nothing eratic about it here Iain, unfortunately it's just been pretty much unremitting rain and hardly any sun or heat for about 2 months. ( apart from the last 2 days )

Hosta that's why I said  many places I am well aware of the big contrast in the weather across the country. The plants still seem to think its Autumn already wherever they are.

Sorry if that didn't come out right Iain. It wasn't meant as a contradiction of what you're saying. I apologise if it appeared othewise.image

I'm just lamenting the rubbish summer we've had here.
