How do I trim this plant?

Hi,

i have moved into a house with this plant in the garden and it is taking over, I'm unsure what the plant is though and how to trim it back.

Does anyone know what the plant is called? Or how to manage it?

It's a Phormium (New Zealand Flax). Yes, they are monster - they don't always produce flower spikes so it must like it's conditions.

Pruning involves cutting long, browning or unwanted leaves near the base. I delve under with a scissors and cut off the lower and unwanted leaves (gloves, long sleeves and eye protection are required!).

Yes - cut away folaige right in at the base. It'll keep producing more, but that's the easiest way of keeping it to a suitable size.

Alternatively - dig it out and split it up with a sharp knife or a spade (it'll take a bit of effort)  and keep a decent section of it to replant. The new piece will gradually become bigger of course, but it'll be a nice healthy new plant.image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
