Cannas in a tub

You are probably beginning to think about overwintering, but I have a different problem I have been offered an old plastic tub which was used as a water container. It has a crack in the bottom, which I guess was the reason it was discarded. It's not very large, oval shape about 2.5 x 1.5 meters, about 50cm deep. I thought of using it for growing cannas as they like a lot of water and rich soil, which we do not have. We also get regular drought here in Brazil!. They could stay in all year round as we do not get any frost. I've tried them in pots but they quickly outgrow them.  Do you think it would work?

  • I'm ending up answering my own question again. Cannas are extremely popular in America, and I've had some good feedback. The general view is that Cannas do very well in a bog garden or by a lake or pond. This has encouraged me to expand the tub idea by digging out a large area and line it with fiber glass. Hopefully this will save me quite a bit of watering.
