First trim, Irish yew

Hi, my little Irish Yew specimens (about 3 feet tall) have put on a good 8 inches of growth. But in the form of long shoots at the top. Am I best to leave them and wait for the plant to fill out, or snip the growing points out?
I'm going to be clipping them to maintain their size eventually. But I heard that snipping out the growing tips can slow the overall growth rate, in normal Yew plants.

(I'm going to clip them to form 6-8ft tall pillars ultimately).
