Tree repair - advice required

image

Hi, I have a tree in my garden that I guess lost a branch at some point, would anyone be able to advise how to repair this to prevent future issues, do I leave open or clean out and seal with something?

in advance thanks for any help

These wounds look very old. I don't think any repair is needed. You should leave it as it is. Someone may come along and offer different advice...Sometimes, trying to cover and patch an area, especially if it's gone through the elements will introduce other problems and even cause bacterial growth, which could weaken the whole tree. So far, this is the natural response to healing the area.

I agree with Borderline. It will either be OK or it won't, you can't alter anything.

Some trees can deal with this, others not so good. What is it?
