Hi. I'm trying to propagate this plant by ground layering and am hoping that I am correct with my assumption that this is a smoke Tree?  Could someone please confirm?

Yes, it is indeed a Cotinus.  Mine roots where the branches touch the ground so you are doing the right thing.

Thank you very much. Any advise on when I should first check for rooting.. After a couple weeks or shall I leave it for longer?

It will take longer than that Torg, probably a couple of months.  You can help it by making a small cut on the underside of the bark where it is touching the ground and burying that section slightly.  Put a large stone or similar over the buried part to make sure the wind doesn't cause the branch to lift which would damage any developing roots.

Ok ta,  will leave it a while then. Its my first attempt at layering and I have indeed made a cut in the branch and pinned it under some fresh compost. I've attached the vertical part to a wooden stick too as support.
