Sunflower Harvesting

i grow mamoth sunflowers every year but have never really done anything with the seeds,

might be a stupid question, but....

can i save these seeds to plant sunflowers next year?

    Yes. let them dry on the flower until they are hard .

     You an also hang the whole flower head up for the birds to get at. Squirrels chew the heads off mine and carry them off.

    I've just harvested one of the big flower heads and roasted  the seeds. Wait till the back of the flower head is yellow/brown and the seeds feel firm & plump. Rub off all the dry chaf and the seeds should come away easily.

    Give them a wash then boil in salted water for 10-15 mins. Strain and rinse. Then roast in the oven for 15 mins.

    They make a lovely snack.

    Can all sunflower seeds be eaten?   Or is it just the yellow sunflowers seeds?
