Moth Orchids - Cutting back old stems
in Plants
Can anyone tell me if now, August, is a good time to cut back old flower stems down to about an inch on these Moth Orchids? If not what time of year is best. Also if I were to cut them back how long should it be before I saw signs of new growth? One other thing would it harm them if I were to repot them now in new orchid compost and while doing this should I cut off any dead roots? These are the first Moth Orchids I've kept and I just want to do what's best for them to encourage them to flower again.

If you feel down the stem until you come to a nobbly bit, that is where a new flowering shoot will come from. Cut just above it. Orchid compost is fairly inert. I don't repot, just add baby bio orchid feed when I give it a weekly soak.
