Plants for a pond

Hi everyone,

I have just acquired a small pond. It is octagonal, approx 3ft diameter, 22inches deep with  straight sides, ie there is no gradient in the water, it is all one depth. There is a fountain/pump in the centre.

We are planning to get some  goldfish,  but need some plants to give them shade. The pond came with 2 planting baskets, about 6inches square, maybe 8inches deep.

Any suggestions as to plants that will be suitable?

I love the look of an American water iris, but am a bit concerned it might be too big, and  am not sure if marginal plants will be appropriate as there is no 'margin', just  the full depth. I'd like something with colour, and the pond is in full sun (when we have any!) most of the day.

Thank you!!
