Outdoor plant box

hello

I lack soil space so I built a 1.5x0.5x0.4m plant box and put it on the decking. I drilled ten 6mm drainage holes in the bottom, added a layer of stones then filled with compost from the garden centre.

In April I planted dill, coriander, radishes, and parsley.

however, only the radishes thrived. A few dill seeds sprouted but never grew >5cm. Same for coriander- about 8 of the 30 seeds sprouted. the parsley didn't even bother.

I live in Stavanger in Norway, which although has the worst climate in continental Europe, I am told the seeds I planted ought to grow outdoors.

does anyone know why my dill coriander and parsley might not have grown? planted too early? Too close together? (5cm apart).

Parsley can be very frustrating even in the UK as seeds are often reluctant to germinate and I think dill needs a fair bit of warmth to get going.  Good veggies for cool climates include carrots, leeks, spinach, broccoli and lettuce.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
