Spring flowering bulbs, most of them come back year after year, so you only have to plant them once.  If you cut off the dead flowers, you get more and better flowers next year, but it's not essential. Cheap and cheerful annuals such as marigolds, poppies, nasturtiums and aquilegia: again, sow the seed once and they'll self seed evermore.

Thyme along a path looks pretty in a cottage garden.

How much room do you have for planting there, jm?

Thyme is lovely - many people like lavender, which will also be fine if you give it the correct requirements. It should get enough sun there. I'd also recommend some of the smaller hebes which are easy to maintain. All evergreens, so you don't have bare ground and extra weeding. image

You could plant spring bulbs in between any of those for some extra colour in late winter/early spring as josusa mentions.  image

Just remembered - dianthus is another good one if your soil's suitable. image

The dianthus Deltoides is nice for edging, i have it edging one of my borders, nice bright red flowers, although flowers have finished, it is ver green so stays nice all year.

Campanula Portenschlagiana is also nice, I have that interspersed with the deltoides, it has a very long flowering season, cut it back and it flowers again.  Very prolific though, I could supply everyone with it?
