When To Pick Corn?
in Fruit & veg
i am a gardening newbie, i planted lots of sweet corn this spring from seed, i am getting corn cobs starting to grow, i can definitely see them growing with the "hair" out of them,
right now they are about 4-6 inches long, just wondering how i can tell when they are ready to pick and eat?....i realize it will not be for awhile, but i have no idea how to tell??

I've done the same thing this year and mine are roughly the same size as yours so it would also be good to know
The tassels on the cobs will turn brown and go dry but silky as they ripen. You can then peel back a little of the skin and test a kernel with a thumbnail. When ripe, it will produce a milky, translucent juice that is neither clear not too opaque.
Make sure you have a pan of boiling water on before you pick them so they can go straight in the pot. The minute they are picked the sugars turn to starch.

I always cook mine in the microwave. Peel back the leaves, remove the silk and some of the leaves. Re-wrap. You can cook several at a time Very quick and doesn't involve pans of boiling water.
