perfumed clematis

I have two perfumed clematis plug plants that are almost ready to plant out.  The question is, just how perfumed are they?  I don't want to put them too close to our house if they are strong smelling (like Honeysuckle of Budehlia for instance).

The clematis are called Clematis Montana Rubens and Clematis Cirrhosa Freckles, both were advertised as scented.

I can only just detect the scent of Freckles with nose to flower but Montanas can carry further although it's still a very delicate fragrance.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thank you Bob, you have put my mind at rest somewhat. I know lavender and rosemary smell, but I have to be up close or brush against these plants to really notice the fragrance.  I just don't want the clematis to mature and then find that the scent is too strong and I feel uncomfortable (or headachy) whilst sitting nearby on the garden bench.
