Clematis or ? for Trellis

We have a trellis in our garden that is around a pond and has a box hedge below it that is about 30 inches high.  We are about to repair it and change the post positions, so the established clematis etc will not be in correct positions.

The clematis shoots each year from just below the hedge height and we cut it back to this every year. Tmain bas stem is rather thich 1-2cm, and there is no chance to lift it as roots are mixed with the hedge roots, so starting again.

I like the idea of cutting back as it gives a chance to repaint the trellis, so what clematis would be suitable fot such cutting back please.

Are you asking which types of Clematis suits cutting back right down to ground level? If you are, it's herbaceous Clematis and any Clematis that flower from later summer onwards.

Group 3 clematis / late summer flowering. Cut back in Feb/March to about 18 inches above ground.

Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.

  • Thank you both, it's helpful information. Although I love gardening, I am not so hot on understanding different plamnts and what is best. Th majority of the planting around the pond was done by the previous owner and we have simply added tubs, shrubs and generally plant up in June with bedding.

The older photo shows off the trellis more than when plants are in full bloom, as below.

As Bright Star says above Group 3 clematis are what you're after.
I cut mine back to about 12" early Feb, give them a handful of blood, fish and bone then a good mulch of compost and within weeks they're up to about 10ft and smothered in flowers

  • Hi Pete,

that looks great as I need to cut down to paint the trellis most years. Can you tell me what varieties yiou have there please.

The clematis we have is quite old and come end July it goes brown on the lower part so we cut it right back then.

The red is Madame julia correvon.
The white is not a clematis but a star jasmine - this cannot be cut down each year - I just pull out the clematis from the jasmine when I chop it back in Feb.
There is a huge choice available for Group 3 clematis

  • Thank you again Pete. I have bookmarked the clematis page and will look at it in detail.
