It grows out from the base and should be pruned in Spring. It'll never be a tree. It's beautiful, enjoy it as it is.
Yeh - they get a bit blousy. Not tree-like, as Ppauper says. Not in their nature.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Prune in March, one foot from the ground.
I also chop bits off when it gets naughty, it doesnt seem to mind, a couple of years ago when I bought it, it was only 12 inches high, but I love it
I have had two, they don't seem to like my garden!
Lavateras are short-lived. Do take softwood cuttings.
I've had a lovely Lavatera × clementii 'Barnsley' https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/178584/Lavatera-x-clementii-Barnsley/Details Each new cutting only lasted 2 to 3 years.
Alan Titchmarsh says they (and daphnes) are funny things they just deside to give up the ghost one day.
In this case, both times, 'one day' was in their first winter!
