Shurb ID

Hi Everyone,

I had a nice visit today to Standen House and Gardens in West Sussex (National Trust).  Highly recommended by the way.

Passed a shrub with an amazing scent.  Honey sweetness.  Looked like a Hebe.  Any ideas?

    Hi Racine

looks like Clethra alnifolia ; better hit the vodka next  !image

  • Cheers Paul.  That looks right.  I see there are also some pink varieties.

Why is everyone not growing this?  That scent drew me in from 20ft away.  Amazing!

    Hello again racine

Not everyone can grow this shrub (or shurb)image ; neutral to acidic soil conditions are vital , and use only rainwater .

I believe they're N.American , and known as the Sweet pepperbush (I think)

  • Not a problem for me Paul.  I've got the right pH and a perfect spot to put one of these in.  Thanks for the rainwater tip.

I've just read somewhere that they are quite late to leaf.  Might be another reason why they are not so popular.
