Sambucus nigra 'Aurea' golden elder not budging

CloggieCloggie Posts: 1,153

I bought a Sambucus nigra 'Aurea' (golden elder) at the same time as buying a Sambucus Nigra Black Lace.

The black lace is in the worst position of the two (quite shady under a tree) and has flowered and grown to about 5ft but the golden one has done nothing.

It is still only inches high and just does nothing.

Any ideas?

I'm starting to think that I need to take it out and give the ground a good dig - wondering if there's a brick or layer of concrete under it or something?

    Hello Cloggie

Sambucus nigra 'Aurea' relish a bright position in a moist but well-drained soil ; I would be inclined to move it to a different site ; would retain better colouration also .

The 'Black Lace' might also benefit from moving if size permits .

Not sure I agree about Aurea, like many gold leaved plants they can scorch in full sun and prefer a bit of shade.

Ah, but I was so much older then
    I'm younger than that now

Due to it "not taking" (it was planted beginning or end of last summer - can't quite remember but same time as the black lace), I was ready to move it to a new bed that I've opened up in full sun and so read again its requirements and find that it should be ok where it is and as punkdoc says, they (the experts!) warn against scorch in full sun so this makes me think there are problems in the soil.

The black lace is not a problem, it's lovely.

I wonder if it can't get its feet down?

Will check but thanks for the input, it's good to talk image

Agree with punkdoc , when I said a brighter position I didn't mean baking full sunshine , just away from any tree overhang .
