Replenish soil

Whilst weeding I have inevitably removed some soil and would like to replenish and was wondering which soil to purchase. Is it just topsoil I need? or should I be adding something else in?

If you compost the weeds and soil together then it will get returned to the garden at a later stage.

If you are unable to use compost made from your own garden, any good compost from most stores will be fine. You can buy topsoil too if you need to add a heavy layer to replenish the soil lost, but this is not really essential if you are just weeding and need some extra soil to top up. It is always good practice to add a new layer of compost at least once a year, as this will condition the soil for years to come. The same applies for potted plants.

Thanks for replies, Borderline, may I ask, when you mention 'any good compost' does that mean a multipurpose  compost?

Yes, multi-purpose compost will be fine for general mixing in and put over the base of established plants. Any other types of compost are just being more specific to pot plants or for propagation purposes.

If you have acid loving plants, then you will need ericaceous compost.
