I've been walking past one every day for 17+ years and often wondered what it was. Then I saw someone picking them so asked what it was - I was surprised. The huge tree I pass is laden with unripe nuts, then overnight the whole lot seem to disappear in one go - which happened last week.
The white flower looks quite camellia-like, but not sure - wrong time of year afaik
