Slugs and snails will eat plants to the ground, but I was assuming it was a fair size of plant. They tend to go for smaller, younger specimens, but are capable of eating a vast amount at one go.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Are you rural? Could be rabbits/deer etc.
Birds are another possibility, but very few things eat the entire plant at one go.

Like Fairygrl, I think its is indeed slugs or smails and, contrary to popular belief, they don't always leave visible trails.
Ah - the picture wasn't there when I posted again. Looks like slug damage to me.
