As this is the first magnolia I have owned dont know if this happens often . My magnolia is called Susan Im told and flowered for the last two years at the usual time spring before the leaves. This year not only did it flower then but I now have about half a dozen flowers now. Does this happen often?

Yes ...very common for them to do this.
