Shrub id & when to prune, please

Hi there

I have a shrub about 5ft tall with green berries. Any ideas as to what it is, and when / how to prune it?

thanks in advance

Looks like a Cotoneaster Horizontalis. It's a shrub that can be trained and shaped. Some will trail and creep. Leave this for now, only shape/prune in early spring time if you need to.

prune now and you won't get berries this year,

prune after flowering next year, you won't get berries next year,

    so the choice is yours

    I don't think it's horizontalis, I'd say more like C. simonsii, or C. Franchettii.

I might well be wrong though.

    Agree Cotoneaster sp.

Maybe a gift from the birds?

Agree with Hostafan not C. Horizontalis..which has tiny leaves and is creepingand prostate.

    This one is upright.

Very hard to id Cotoneasters accurately as they cross pollinate to produce hybrids.... the seeds are then dropped by the birds

With my Cotoneaster I wait until it flowers and starts to produce berries and then prune it. I just tidy up the ends of the flowering stems, cutting back to just in front of the flowers and berries. any branches that are in the way or just untidy are removed to give a better shape.
