What is this tree?

My brother took me to lunch and we saw this tree as we walked home but neither of us could identify it.

I told him if I posted it here someone would know what it was

    I'd guess it's a Black Oak

Well done Pete. Amazing!  Never heard of it myself but looks like you're on the nail. Sound a bit sinister. image

Google'd Black Oak and the pictures agree.

    Thanks!

Funnily enough I've seen one locally somewhere and it was your post that inspired me to find out what it is.
So we've both learned something today.
Looks a love tree - as are all oaks

It is lovely Pete, my brother has just returned from many, many years in California where the wildlife and vegetation are quite alien. He lives in the same village we grew up in and we were both taken aback by the maturity of the trees we remember being planted some 20 years ago.

I recognised most of them but that oak had us both, never seen one before as far as I know so you're right definitely learned something including how big they get in 20 years. Thank you again for putting us out of the misery of suspense. Wonder how old yours is?

The one I see seems to be a rogue sapling planted in a field where I walk my dog. For some reason they've planted about 100 oaks in about 1/2 acre. I think it was a school project about 15 years ago, they're getting a bit tangled now.
I often wonder how it'll look in 50yrs time - I'll never know

100 oaks in 1/2 an acre!

Maybe best not to know, some archaeologist might find Methusaleh if he hacks away for long enough image
