Adding thick layer of top soil and seed over old grass/moss to level lawn

Hi,

Does anyone know if it is ok to cover an existing lawn with a layer of top soil (approx 4-5inches) to level the lawn and then reseed?

thanks

As long as you don't have a bad perennial weed problem such as dandelions (which will grow through over a foot of soil covering them), it will work.  The buried grass will die and eventually rot down providing some nutrients for the new layer of grass above.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks BobTheGardener. Don't have many weeds, but do have a fair bit of moss.

  • I think the lawn had been neglected for a few years by the previous owner of the house. We have sandy soil so I'm hoping it's not a drainage issue.

  • Ah yes it could be the shade  That's good to know abo lawn for shade. Thanks.

  • My garden was at one time an orchard. It has more moss than grass.

I guess it was the shade thrown by the fruit tree's that got the moss growing.

Would I be right to assume this?

How long would it take to recover? I have had a row of conifers (five of 'em) felled.
