Collecting seeds

NotyalcaNotyalca Posts: 134

So I have been given / collected a few types of seeds (aquilegia, geranium, alliums, Poppies, and more)

If the plant is releasing its seeds now, does that mean I plant now?? Or hold on till next spring and start them?  or is it the same difference? Will the seeds just lay dormant till spring?

All the questions!

I tend to sow all of the ones mentioned as soon as they are ripe. Certainly Alliums and Aquilegia do better from fresh seed than from stored. Even if they do not germinate straight away, they often need the effect of planting to break dormancy.

I agree with Berghill. Sow. Some will germinate very quickly, next month. Others will germinate in spring. Others in a mild spell in mid winter. Many seeds that need a cold spell to break dormancy are not dormant if sowed fresh.
