Long flowering geranium 30cm or less

kc.sdickc.sdic Posts: 91

Hi there (again!) Just planted 3 Geranium Buxtons Blue only to find that Buxtons Blue are pink :O(

I can only really have Geraniums that are 30cm or less along my fence. I have Geranium Elke (which I like very much) and wanted something to contrast (blue  or purple) but am struggling to find a geranium that is low and flowers all summer. Any ideas thanks? :O)

Hi Rozanne sadly is 60cm twice the height of what I can fit on my wall. :O(

This is what I have found if its blue it's usually either too tall or only flowers for 2 months !

That's why I went for Buxtons Blue but then found that it's pink!

  • My Rozanne is is only 30cm high. Opinions seem to differ.

Kc.sdic, I'm confused on why your Geranium Buxton Blue is pink. There is a Geranuim Wallichianum 'Buxton's Blue' which is sometimes classed as Buxton's Variety. There is also a Geranium Wallichianum 'Havana Blue' which is also quite compact too.

if Buxton Blue was pink it would be called Buxton Pink,

Very few plants are really true blue, but Buxton Blue is on the blue side of mauve.

Hi Borderline - I contacted the nursery about my pink Buxton Blues and they said "You'll find that Buxton's Blue doesn't show its true blue character until the weather turns cooler in the late Summer. All the wallichianum types exhibit far more pink when the weather is warm and light levels are high. "  As I already have pink geraniums along that wall I obviously wanted a contrast and had read that Buxtons was a true blue, but that's no good if they are only blue under certain conditions. I wonder if ;Havana Blue will be the same given that it is a "wallichianum type"?

I agree nutcutlet, Buxtons should be either called SOMETIMES BLUE or yes BUXTON MOSTLY PINK!

I did all the research including RHS but apparently Buxton Blue is only more blue than pink under certain conditions :o(

How about geranium 'Azure Rush' which is a more compact version of 'Rozanne'. Flowers from June until September. I have 3 in different positions, and none are taller than 20cm.

Kc.sdic, unfortunately, I have never grown the purple coloured geraniums, so can't comment on the level of 'blue' in certain conditions, but would not be surprised at those comments. But I think it's worth trying out 'Havana Blue'.

I had another check and found an unusual low growing Geranium but with dark purple foliage, almost black. Very interesting combination. Geranium Pratense 'Midnight Reiter' seems to have paler purple/blue flowers and the eventual height is between 25cm to 30cm.
