Just seen a rat

Help! Have just seen a rat in the garden, we had a couple last year and used poison to get rid of them, they were eating the bird food that I'd put out. We stopped the food and put poison down and that worked , but now they are back, is there anything we can do to stop them coming in, don't like using poison really because there are cats etc around.

Either stop feeding the birds, or get a Jack Russell
