Dahlia side shoots broke by wind

JamesOJamesO Posts: 230

Hi I have some Dahlias that have had the side shoots which connect to the main stems break due to the over night winds, as I forgot to add canes for them.  Where the tear has take place will the dahlias (not sure how to put it) plant structure heal and repair that area or would you have to cut the main stem further down.

Thanks for any info

It will heal.  You could use a sharp knife to make it a clean cut which will help it heal quicker and lessen the chances of disease but it's not absolutely necessary.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Many Thanks Bob for the advise as well as being a gardener you have to be a doctor for these guys

  • Hey Guys, my dahlia just broke in the wind at the Y end, it didn't come off per se, it just fell onto the ground. So that part is got a folding now, what do I do? Should I cut it off and propagate it or should I just tape it or tie it up the stake, will it survive. It is a beautiful stem, I don't wanna loose it. Got a gorgeousssss bud ready to bloom as well. So disappointed to see my hardwork gone this way, please respond if you find this, would really mean a lot to me.
