I find systemic weed killer to be too runny as it often runs off the plant before completing its task.  To overcome this I mix the weed killer with wall paper paste into a thick paste and paint it on with a small paint brush.  Thus the active agent is kept in place so much longer having a much better effect.  An added bonus is other adjacent plants are less likely to become contaminated.
